My cousin Santiago was living in Germany as a foreign exchange student and came to visit us. We decided to tour the Salzburg area for Columbus day weekend.
Hallstadt
Hallstadt - this is your traditional Alpine home.
We drove right by Red Bull headquarters which was started up by an Austrian. As the Austrian's say "Das ist der Hammer!"
Mondsee - the lake behind us is shaped like the moon hence the name (Mondsee = Moon lake). Sorry you can't see the lake very well... if I had a nickel for every picture that I had someone take of us blocking the very thing we wanted to get...
Mondsee - we were told to try the apfelstrudel at the red shop behind us and were all excited until we found out it cost almost $10. Keine Chance!
Mondsee's cathedral is famous because this is where they filmed the wedding scene in the Sound of Music. (See inside photo at the end)
Salzburg means Salt town. And so we had to go to the Salt mine! They made us wear these pajamas. Sehr gut = very niiiiice
Salt mine cart ride.
We crossed into Germany hundreds of feet below ground.
Salt mine art.
Traversing the salt mine lake via boat.
Finally Salzburg!
Salzburg is the town of Mozart. He was born here in 1756.
Mirabell gardens
Lots of dwarf statues here.
Salzburg church
Salzburg - view of Honhensalzburg fortress
Mozart's birthplace - it's just a cafe now.
Hellbrunn Palace
These next photos are for my niece Isabella. She loves the Sound of Music and we took a 'Sound of Music' tour of the area. This was our tour guide who would often break into song singing various Sound of Music songs! So hope you like it Bella!
Leopold's Crown Palace. It's hard to see, but we are on the opposite side of the lake of the 'backyard' of the Von Trapp's house.
The Gazebo! They don't let you inside anymore after an elderly lady tried to skip across the benches and broke her hip.
Frohnburg Castle - in the movie, this was the front of the Von Trapp's house. Here Melanie is running and trying to sing 'I am Confident!'
Frohnburg Castle - coming inside. By the way, this part wasn't part of the tour and we kinda snuck (ran) into the private school and ran out! Your welcome Bella!
Frohnburg Castle - Front door. I love the scene where the Captain tears down the Nazi flag.
Mirabell Gardens
Mirabell Gardens - We messed this shot up a bit. The scene was actually facing the other side of the entrance. Sorry Bella!
Mirabell Gardens - it was a bit rainy so we had to re-enact this scene with umbrellas. Call it artistic license.
Mirabell Gardens - Tap the dwarf on the head!
Mirabell Gardens - Yeah!
Mondsee Cathedral - Wedding scene - we gave up trying to re-enact this shot. The people in the church weren't very cooperative.
